All Japanese students have to study English.  There are three types of letters used for writing.  Chinese characters were brought to Japan in the 6th century A.D.  Sometimes characters stand for part of a word or for a word sound.  The official language of Japan is Japanese.  The numbers in Japanese from 1-10 are:

- ee-chee

- nee

- sahn

- shee

- go

- ro-koo

- shee-chee

- hah-chee

- koo

- joo

Calligraphy, writing with a brush and ink, is a fine art in Japan.
